Common questions we are asked with responses:
There is no set route to becoming a beekeeper in the UK. Many beekeepers start out by keeping a small colony of bees as a hobby because you do not need specific qualifications to become a beekeeper and there are no mandatory registration systems in place, unlike other EU countries. However, it is highly advisable for beginner beekeepers choose to join a local branch of the British Beekeeping Association (BBKA) to find out about their courses to ensure that they are getting the right information to start keeping bees on their own.
Beginners’ classes are usually held from January onwards, starting with some theory sessions which are followed up by hands on outdoor apiary sessions when the weather improves in the spring.
Local branches of the BBKA usually have a calendar of events running throughout the year, including guest speaker events, where the latest information and updates to beekeeping are explored. Although it may seem daunting to attend these events as a beginner beekeeper, you will pick up a great deal of information that you will find useful later in your beekeeping journey plus make some new friends along the way!
Most BBKA branches offer the opportunity for beginners to sign up to a mentorship scheme which enables them to spend time with a more experienced beekeeper who will take them on inspections and offer advice when needed. This is a helpful way to dip your toe in the water before taking the plunge to buy your own colony and equipment.
Beekeeping is a very rewarding hobby and can be a very effective tool for attending to your own wellbeing and mental health. However, it requires commitment on the part of the beekeeper to ensure that high standards of animal welfare are used at all times. To achieve this, it is good to ensure that you read around the subject as much as you can and aim for reputable publications for this information. Course leaders will be able to make recommendations for good publications and there are some available through local branches that you would be able to loan.
